About two weeks (Spring 2017) ago I received an email from a mom in Russia. She explained to me that her son had been admitted to several U.S. colleges and they were headed here to visit them, so afterward he could make his final decision about where to attend.
“You have to gauge a little by your own child,” said Janice Caine, the owner of Custom College Visits, an agency that organizes campus tours for families. “You don’t necessarily want to pressure them, but I think it’s a good time if you have a school that is local to go see them and get an idea of what it’s like to be on a college campus and what kinds of questions people are asking.”
As you make your way through the college search process, think of the school you will ultimately choose as your home away from home — a place that will be comfortable for you.
Keeping a journal is an excellent way for your teen to capture his or her thoughts and observations about the campuses you will be visiting. Having detailed notes will also allow your teen to compare the different schools once you arrive home and the journal will serve as a refresher if he or she needs to come back to the information at a later date.

Last week my colleague Diane and I spent an afternoon visiting Occidental College, a small liberal arts college in Pasadena, CA that offers a diverse and wide variety of learning opportunities. It has been a while since I was last there, and I wanted to reacquaint myself with the campus, the facilities and all that the school has to offer.
We though it might be relevant to suggest a system for collecting and tracking information, contacts, awards, college visit pictures and notes that would make it easy to find the high school contacts, activities, awards and adventures necessary to complete college applications.
